It is an incredible honor for Red Deerian’s to be able to host the 2019 Canada Winter Games. Not only are we a strong community that proudly supports our local athletes, but we now have the opportunity to support and cheer on athletes from all across Canada.
The 2019 Canada Winter Games are being held over a period of two weeks. There are a variety of sporting events being held at various locations throughout the City of Red Deer with a few events being held in Calgary. The opening ceremony will kick start these spectacular events on Friday, February 15th with events running through until Sunday, March 3.
There are many fun and interesting facts about the upcoming Canada Winter Games. Here are 6 fun facts that you might not know:
One – Visitors
The City of Red Deer and surrounding communities are privileged to welcome more then 20,000 visitors to the area over the course of the event plus over 3,600 elite athletes, their managers, and coaches.
Two – Sporting Events
The Canada Winter Games hosts over 19 different sports. These sports are participated in by athletes as young as 12 years of age to 23 years of age. Some of the incredible sports you can expect to see at the games include: Alpine Skiing & Para Alpine Skiing, Archery, Gymnastics, Swimming, Badminton, Boxing, Cross Country Skiing, Curling, Figure Skating, Snowboarding, Hockey, Judo, Ringette, Speed Skating, Trampoline, Wheel Chair Basket Ball, Table Tennis, and Squash.
Three – Special Events
There will be over 150 events to take in. 80 of theses events include music, theatre, and visual artists, all of which are free to the public. All participating artists are Canadian. Some of the live musicians you can take in include: Alan Doyle, Bif Naked, Brett Kissle, Gord Bamford, Scott Helman, Walk Off The Earth, Wide Mouth Mason and The Stumbellas.
Four – Monumental Event
The 2019 Canada Winter Games is the largest event to ever be hosted in Red Deer and the Central Alberta area. It is also the largest event to be hosted in Alberta since the Olympic Games were held in Calgary in 1988.

Six – One of Our Own
One of our own Pure team members, Tana, will be singing at the opening ceremony with the youth choir Ihana.
