In today’s world, children and parents alike are spending more time distracted with electronics and television and less time being active and interacting with each other. Recent studies show that the average families spend 34 minutes a day together. 34 minutes is not a lot of time and most of this time is not time spent being active. The saying goes families who are active together are happy together.
Being an active family does not need to be time consuming or complicated. Keeping your activities fun and creative but simple, will help you establish a routine and keep your family on track with staying active. Shooting some hoops, or going for a walk/jog are a few examples on how to make the most of the time you spend with your loved ones. By setting aside half an hour to an hour engaging in some sort of physical activities 3 times a week, you will see improvements in your family’s health and wellness. You May also notice that your family has developed a deeper connection and understanding of one another.
What Benefits Are There to Being Active as a Family?
- Quality Time – Getting active with your family allows you to spend good quality time with your children in a tech free environment, where there is little to distract you from the most important people in your life. Leaving devices such as cellphones or video games in the house or out of reach during this time will help everyone to focus and participate in family activities.
- Engagement – Being together spending quality time with your children opens up the door for communication between you and your children. This can give you the opportunity to really interact with your children and really get to know them on a deeper level.
- Mentorship – Getting out there and really pushing yourself helps your children know you are serious about your health. Children usually follow in their parents footsteps. Take this opportunity to lead by example. Parents that practice a healthy lifestyle teach their children to live a healthy lifestyle that will continue as they grow.
- Goal Setting – Working out together as a family gives parents the opportunity to teach children how to set and achieve goals. Making and accomplishing goals are essential skills that will help children become successful through out their lives. Discussing your children’s dreams and working with them to achieve a goal provides a great opportunity to become a closer family.
There are also many health related benefits to having an active family. Being active reduces stress, improves quality of sleep, increases strength, and improves heart health. Research has shown that children who are more active do better academically, therefore setting them up for success.
